Laura Diers - Mrs. Iowa-America 2008

What a journey it has been up to this point! Nine years ago, I competed in my very first pageant and I have been hooked ever since! Other than the year that my son, Wyatt was born, I have done a pageant every year in preparation for Mrs. America! This year I finally get the chance to fulfill this dream & goal!

I am an Architectural Drafter & Interior Designer, specializing in Kitchen Design with Stott & Associates Architects in Ames, IA. I am very active in my community with Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics and promoting my platform of educating our youth on the early warning signs of an abusive relationship through the use of Liz Claiborne’s “Love Is Not Abuse” curriculum and the organization “Break the Cycle”. As a 16 year old I found myself in an abusive situation and had I known the warning signs, it would have been easier & safer to leave. I am embracing this opportunity to share my personal story to educate women in similar situations. We need to be silent no more on this epidemic, and as Mrs. Iowa, my voice will definitely be heard. To learn more about this topic you can visit www.loveisnotabuse.com www.loveisnotabuse.com & www.breakthecycle.org.

I am married to my husband, Louis, an Emergency Communications Dispatcher for the city of Ames. Together we have a son, Wyatt. I also have 2 other children, Caisha & Zach, as well as a stepdaughter, Nala.

I started doing pageants as a way of stepping out of my comfort zone & challenging myself to push through my shyness. I am happy to say that I no longer consider myself a shy person and it is largely due to my participation in pageants. Not only have I learned invaluable speaking & interview skills, but my confidence and self-esteem have truly skyrocketed which I feel helps me to be a more effective wife, mother and career woman!

As a little girl I dreamed of wearing the Miss America crown, but never truly believed that a shy little, farm girl could ever attain that “status”. Once I got married, I thought my dreams of competing were over; And just when I was starting to really discover who I was! But then I came across the Mrs. America Pageant and I knew that it was something I had to do, and I have never looked back! Women, especially married women, need to realize how important their role is in our society. We are the ones mentoring & raising the next generation. It is in out hands to shape theirs & our future! Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a career woman, we are the best resource & hope for the world.

If you would be interested in contacting me for an appearance or a speaking engagement please email me at MrsIowaAmerica@yahoo.com.

I could never have done any of this without my sponsors. My sister, Tracy, is my biggest fan & supporter and is always there when I need a helping hand. I am proud to be supported by Redling Repair in Gilbert, Duck Worth Wearing in Ames, and my Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters!

Mrs Iowa 2008 is named.
